My partner and I love sushi and have eaten all types from cheap to fancy. The base of all sushi is rice, and yet the pre-made rice for the class was legitimately undercooked, underseasoned, and just bad. It made the sushi almost inedible. The fish looked nice but had very little flavor, so we could only taste the terrible rice and were only able to eat a couple pieces each. Also, the tempura batter was wrong. It was like a funnel cake beer batter - too thick, lumpy, and cakey for tempura. That was a total miss and they served the tempura with sweet chili sauce versus actual tempura dipping sauce (tentsuyu). The cooking class was a gift so we tried to have fun with it but the end result was the worst sushi and tempura I've ever had. Everyone was so quiet while eating because no one seemed to be enjoying themselves. It felt like they had just googled how to make Japanese food and thought that was enough to teach it...
We had an amazing time at the sushi-making class with Chef Valentino and his fabulous assistant! The experience was so much fun from start to finish — we got hands-on with rolling sushi, learned some great techniques, and even got to enjoy some delicious spring rolls. Chef Valentino was super engaging and made the class both educational and entertaining. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a fun and tasty experience!
I had the pleasure of attending the sushi workshop lead by Chef John and his son. What an awesome experience! They were both so engaging, entertaining, and helpful. We created salmon, tuna, and California rolls as well as nagiri, all of which were delicious. If you’re looking for a sushi making class, this is the one!
Our leadership team recently attended a Sushi Making Class with Chef John and could not have been more pleased. Not only was it a great team building experience, but we shared delicious food and many laughs during the process. Chef John was engaging and informative and patient as he took us step by step through the process of making sushi. And there were options for our entire group which included fish lovers as well as vegetarians and gluten-free team members. The facility itself was easy to get to, organized, and just an overall great environment. I would recommend Selfup and Chef John without any reservation or hesitation!
