Gumbo is perhaps one of the most quintessential, important dishes in Southern cuisine. In fact, it is the official cuisine in the state of Louisiana! Gumbo is a thick, hearty type ... moreof stew which begins with a strongly flavored stock and some sort of protein which can range from shrimp to crawfish to pork or sausage. These two ingredients are then mixed with the southern “holy trinity” of celery, bell peppers and onions. Various spices are incorporated as well to give the gumbo its characteristic heat!

In this class, Chef Pendarvis will share his southern roots with you by instructing you in the art of making this important dish. With his wonderful sense of humor and love for telling stories of the Southland, he will immediately make you feel at home, creating a wonderfully fun and educational experience!

It can be intimidating to participate in a cooking class, particularly if you are learning a technique that is unfamiliar. In the No Frills Dumpling Class, Chef Patty Chan and Chef ... moreMarco make their participants feel immediately at home by beginning the session with a simple introduction. “The first thing we ask them is to tell a story,” Chef Marco explains. “And that’s the hardest part for most people. It’s not the dumpling making but telling a story about their experience with food. Food is a gathering point…. We try to express how this is going to be a story in their book.”

Chef Patty Chan seeks to impart her passion for dumpling cooking upon each and every one of the class participants. She honors her family’s heritage and her own personal memories by carefully yet informally instructing students in the art of dumpling making. Here you will learn everything you need to know about dumpling making, from constructing the skin to creating the fillings to learning the five traditional folding and crimping techniques!

Learned how to make fresh pasta with Chef Celio. He is a wonderful and charming instructor who made the entire process look effortless. I booked this class for a date night, and it was a success! My boyfriend and I had so much fun. The class was set up so that everyone was working around a kitchen island. Everyone worked together to make 4 types of pastas. We also enjoyed salad, wine, appetizers, ... more and tiramisu. I usually feel empty without eating meat, but this vegetarian meal was delicious and filling. I had such a great time and highly recommend this class.

I had the most wonderful time making fresh pasta with a group of strangers led by chef Celio. We walked in and were greeted with complimentary wine! What a nice surprise. We made 3 types of pasta from scratch: butternut squash and ricotta tortelloni, fettuccine, and gnocchi. Nothing can compare to fresh pasta and chef Celio even paired them each with a different sauce. For our appetizers, we hand ... more pulled our own mozzarella bocconcini for our salads. He also amazed me by making Parmesan bowls right in front of us to put our salads in. I had no idea it was that easy to do, mind blown. As if that wasn't enough, we made tiramisu for dessert to finish the night. I can't rave about this experience enough and look forward to coming back with friends and family. This would be perfect for a birthday or team building. Bonus: vegetarian friendly. I personally am not but I loved how inclusive this class was for vegetarians while still being delicious. Celio has decades of experience working as a chef in the north end and he was so friendly and fun. Definitely worth it!

My wife and I were looking for a unique date night and we were not let down! Chef Celio and his wonderful wife were kind, inviting, helpful, and hilarious, and the class (and food!!) was amazing! We made 4 different pasta dishes and a salad that looked like they could be served at a 5 star restaurant, but Chef Celio showed us how we could make them at home in our own kitchen. And of course, who can ... more forget the delicious tiramisu to end the evening. This is money well spent - it's a great learning experience, a great night out, a great dinner, and also a great chance to meet and interact with others taking the class. If I could give this 6 stars, I would!

This was the first cooking class I've done in Boston, but definitely not the last with this chef! Celio and his wife helped us prepare a delicious spread of seasonal pastas with just the right amount of education and enough freedom to really learn from the class. The passion in each dish was conveyed by the silence during the meal! Our group of 6 worked together with the chef to create 4 pastas, a ... more salad, and a dessert. Coupled with wine, our class was perfect! Looking forward to the expansion of Selfup and what's to come next.

I just had the pleasure of taking the Italian Brunch class with Chef Celio. You can't help but be moved by his incredible passion and love for cooking. I smiled the entire time. More importantly, as someone who doesn't regularly cook, he showed how simple it was to make gourmet Italian food at home--and gourmet it was. The food was as good as the best North End restaurant you'll find!

I took the Italian Brunch class with Celio Pereira, which focused on salad, homemade mozzarella, pasta, and tiramisu. I've always been too intimidated to attempt mozzarella or pasta from scratch, but Celio made it SO simple. Even though the class was large (~20 people), he gave each person individual attention and had us all working together by the end. I still can't believe how incredible everything ... more turned out. With a combination of demonstration and practice, followed by plenty of time for tasting (my personal favorite), I really understood how all of the steps came together to form the restaurant-quality finished product. And I *really* mean restaurant quality. It was to DIE for - it would make anyone's Italian grandmother proud. After just a few short hours, I feel fully equipped to tackle my own Italian brunch, start to finish. Celio's bubbliness and attention to his students is really an experience you cannot miss. Plus --- this makes a great date!

Such a fun experience!! We did Chef Celio's Italian Dinner with Tiramisu Finale cooking class with, where we made four kinds of pasta dishes, fresh burrata salad and tiramisu - all from scratch! :) Chef Celio has 32 years experience in Italian cuisine and made the class super interactive and fun! The class was a total of about 12-15 people, a great size to meet some new people and interact. There ... more were also some appetizers and drinks available for us to enjoy while we prepared the food! After about two hours of cooking, everyone sat down at a communal table and enjoyed the delicious dinner together! These classes are also great for team building/group activity and very reasonably priced for 3 hour cooking class + full dinner! Can't wait to try their dumpling and chocolate making classes!

It was my first italian cooking class and it was so much fun! I learned how to make 3 different types of pasta (tortelloni, fettuccini, ravioli) and gnocchi. I had an awesome time with my friends! Even though dinner was not ready until 2 hours after, there were appetizers and lots of wine available! Definitely recommend to go with a group of friends!

I've never taken a cooking class before and was blown away over how fun this was and how easy it was to follow along. The Italian cooking class was about ten people which was the perfect size. It was also located right in the North End which was not only convenient but felt very authentic. Chef Celio was a great teacher and made ever step simple and fun. He was the head chef at Mamma Maria in the ... more North End for 17 years and if you know anything about Italian in the North End, you know just exactly how impressive that is. We started the night with plenty of wine (an unexpected but awesome treat) and then we made fresh mozzarella to put on a salad. As an added bonus, because we had some extra time, we even got to make a parmesan cup to put the salad in (and I'm always a fan of incorporating more cheese into a meal). For the pasta we made ricotta gnocchi, truffle ravioli, truffle tortelloni, and fettucine -- some regular pasta and some squid ink pasta. It was really cool to learn how to make multiple types of pasta and everyone had a hand in making each dish. Turns out making pasta is pretty easy! I'll definitely start doing it at home now. After a couple hours of cooking, the class sat down together to eat and it was amazing how a bunch of strangers came together to cook something so delicious. By the end, I truly feel like I made some new friends. To finish, we all had a blast making homemade tiramisu. Definitely recommend for a birthday, anniversary, work event, or just a girl's night out. It's probably one of the most affordable cooking classes I've found and we made so much food!

I've always been wary of cooking classes because 70% of the time, I can't eat what we cook being a vegetarian. However, I found the Vegetarian Italian cooking class on the SelfUp website and was so excited to try it! Our class was in the South End (lots of parking available) and we were anxious to make some homemade Italian food. There were drinks (wine!) and small apps when we got there and then ... more we got started with the class. The instructor, Celio, made the pasta dough (you have to make a lot for a class of 15), but he showed us how to make it. The first pasta we made was a tortelloni (a larger tortellini) with a homemade ricotta filling. We got to roll and stuff them, which was cool! Then we put them to the side and got started on the next one which was linguini. Next, we made a ricotta based gnocchi (found I like this much better than potato-based ones). Finally, we did the beet spaghetti. Once we prepared all the pastas, we made our own individual tiramisu. This was our favorite part! We let them sit for an hour while we prepared homemade mozzarella from cheese curds to make a salad. Finally, we sat down for dinner (with our salads that we prepared) while Chef Celio put the pasta dishes together. The first dish was the tortelloni with a puttanesca sauce (SO GOOD!). The second was the ricotta based gnocchi with a brown butter sage sauce (I literally could not stop eating this). Next up was fettuccine alfredo, which was Josh's favorite. Our whole group was so full after these that we didn't cook the beet spaghetti and instead got to take bags of it home. We finished off the evening with our tiramisu. The whole night was SO much fun. We think it's a great date night activity, but also great for team building. Loved every second and we didn't want it to end. AND we left full! Could not have been better. Thank you SelfUp and Chef Celio!
